How To Migrate Your Data from An OLD Mac to A NEW Mac

Recently purchased a new Mac? Today I'm showing several ways to migrate your data from an old Mac to a NEW one. There are several methods and I am going to discuss which method is best for different situations.

There are 4 ways (essentially) to migrate data from an old mac to a new one.

They are:

1. Migration Assistant
2. Restore from Time Machine backup
3. Use cloud services like iCloud, Dropbox or Google Drive
4. Manually

Migration Assistant is by far the easiest, but it isn't for everyone. If you've migrated from Mac to Mac in the past, this means any junk that's floating around on your system is coming along for the ride. This also isn't a good option if your hard drive is actively failing. In order to use Migration Assistant, just open the utility on your old Mac (just search for "Migration Assistant") and follow the prompts. You'll then open your new Mac, on the 3rd or 4th screen it will ask if you are going to be migrating data from an old Mac. Select this option and make sure both computers are on the same wireless network. This process can take several hours to as long as a full day.

Time Machine is a great method to use if your hard drive does fail, but you've taken the time to back everything up to an external drive. This will not migrate license numbers for software so have the expectation that any software that does require a serial number will need to either be re-authorized or re-purchased.

iCloud or other cloud services like Dropbox and Google Drive can be great options to move your data if your old computer has begun to slow down and has entered the beginning stages of hard drive failure. If your old Mac is running MacOS Sierra (or newer) just enable the Desktop and Documents saving feature. It's located in System Preferences....iCloud....iCloud Drive... Options... and it's the first item in the list. Then, you'll need to move your most important data to either the Desktop or (preferably) Documents folder. Be sure to give it time to upload to the cloud (upload times are usually 1/10th that of download speeds). When you get your new Mac, just enter in your iCloud information and all your data will come back down onto your computer.

Manually moving data is a great option for anyone with simple needs and when combined with cloud services like iCloud (especially for contacts, calendars and photos).
